Bali, known as 'the isle of the gods', is an island in Indonesia located at the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. Known for its forested volcanic mountains, iconic rice paddies, beautiful beaches and coral reefs, the island is a true tropical paradise.
For photographers there is a veritable treasure trove of possible things to shoot: from gorgeous mountains to colourful street processions, tropical wildlife to stunning sunsets, you won't be disappointed in the sheer beauty and range of creative inspiration around you.
Where you will be staying
The masterclass takes place near Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali. Famed for its ancient arts and crafts, Ubud is one of the most popular destinations for travellers to visit, but unlike the south coast of Bali it retains its traditional identity. During the residency you will shoot on location in Ubud and we will also travel to various destinations around the island, to help you get those stellar shots of the most beautiful sites around.
The residency is held at the beautiful Bali Purnati Centre for the Arts in Batuan village on the outskirts of Ubud town. Set between the lush green of the jungle and rice fields on one side, and the traditional temple building of the villagers on the other, the centre provides an oasis of beauty and calm.
You will be staying in beautiful Balinese-style twin (shared) rooms and served three meals a day (all included in the price) with vegetarian and vegan options. Bottled water is also provided. There is free pool access, and other services (laundry, traditional massage, additional snack food and alcoholic drinks) are available upon request for a small charge.
About the masterclass
Noel will lead sessions both in the classroom and on location, teaching you how to recognize, predict, and control light to capture the purest essence of your subject and surroundings. You’ll also master composition as a powerful tool to evoke particular emotional responses from your audience and lend gravity to your subjects. He’ll take you step-by-step through approaching and appraising a scene, finding atypical perspectives, capturing your ideal frame, and post-processing your images to fulfill their most engaging potential.
The blend of classroom instruction, on-location guided shooting, live post-processing demonstrations, and image critique will enable you to fast-track your learning and see immediate results in the improvement of your technique and captures. You will also have the opportunity to go out and practice in a variety of locations: with Avalon's exclusive links with local craftsmen, artists, property-owners and organisations you will be given unique access to places, events, and sights off-the-beaten track, away from the tourist path.

Getting to Bali
The only travel that isn’t included in the residency fee is your travel to and from the island of Bali. Try to book flights early to get good deals. For visa information, please click here. Travelling from most countries you can stay for up to 30 days on a free visa, obtained on arrival.
Once you arrive, we organise all transport to all of the activities and performances. If you wish to do some of your own exploring in your free time, or before / after the residency, scooter hire is very cheap and is a great way to get around (if you’re happy negotiating Bali roads). Car and driver hire is also reasonably priced, if you know where to look and what to expect. We can recommend some places - just let us know if you need some help.
