China: Performing Arts Workshop

About the workshop


This programme immerses UK-based performers and directors in the rituals and traditions of China. Throughout the course, daily workshop sessions give participants the chance to learn and hone new performance skills in voice, movement and character, engaging with a variety of inspirational forms including the legendary Chinese opera. Participating artists will work with experts in Chinese traditional and contemporary performance, and forge lasting collaborations with Chinese practitioners and performers.


The programme includes practical training in:

  • Chinese Opera: storytelling

  • Chinese Opera: characters

  • Weapon-Wielding and Props

  • Mask-work

  • Movement, gesture, and posture

  • Ritual traditions

  • Intercultural approaches

​The 10-day workshop will culminate in a sharing to an invited audience of industry specialists, to showcase work and ideas created during this intensive. The aim is to produce new ideas for future collaborations between artists based in the UK and China, and selected artists may be invited to receive further support and mentoring to continue with development of their ideas in Shanghai, in the UK, or in both countries.

Participants are responsible for their travel to and accommodation in Shanghai.
